According to researchers at the University of Illinois, more active play helps kids develop better thinking skills. They found that kids between 7 and 9 years old who ran around playing soccer, tag, jump rope, and other active games for at least 70 minutes a day exhibited improved thinking skills compared to kids who didn’t move as much. The study looked at an after-school program called Fitness Improves Thinking in Kids (FITKids) which provided students with a snack, a health lesson, and 70 minutes of exercise via a variety of activities, with the focus on fun rather than competition.
So, what does this mean for your kids? It’s no secret that most kids in America today are not getting enough physical activity in their days due to a number of factors, including schools slashing physical education programs, parents afraid to let their kids play alone outside, and the ubiquity of technology- video games, TV, social media, etc. Parents know that their kids need to be more active, but they may not know how to go about improving their family’s routines.
