“If the Good Lord intended us to walk, he wouldn’t have invented roller-skates.” So spoke Willy Wonka in Roald Dahl’s classic novel, famously brought to life by the colorful, charismatic Gene Wilder. But while Willy Wonka skips the skates in favor of all things candy, many films take a closer look at the world of roller-skating. Which movie skating classics make our cut? Stick around and find out.
Ready? Set. Roll!
In a world of black and white, silent films, you’d think the action would be a little . . . outdated. But Charlie Chaplin brings The Rink to life with a series of skating stunts that impress us all these years later. This skating film is classic comedy that leaves us as entertained as the lady Charlie Chaplin is trying to impress!
(For more Charlie Chaplin on roller-skates, we recommend the 1936 film Modern Times).
Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, and two roller-skating interludes? We’re there! This movie has artistry, fun, and Olivia Newton-John’s famous pipes. The skating numbers have flash, sequence, and some pretty impressive skating-in-sync. It’s an 80’s classic that may even inspire some of our skaters to don sequins and leg warmers for Throwback Thursday.
The Muppets Take Manhattan
Okay, so this one isn’t a skating film per se, but it does include an awesome scene where Miss Piggy borrows some quad skates to chase purse snatchers through Central Park, so we’re giving it a win.
This 2009 film gave roller derby its turn in the spotlight. Starring Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, and Kristin Wiig, this movie follows a teen misfit who finds her place (and quite a few bruises) among the hardcore skaters of her local roller derby team. Take a page from Page and “put on some skates. Be your own hero.” Skatetown USA is home to the South Florida Roller Girls!
