Nothing beats an afternoon at the rink. Whether you’re celebrating another birthday with a day of play or catching up with friends over pizza and skating tricks, roller-skating is a fun, wholesome activity that can keep kids entertained all day. But how much do you know about your favorite family activity?
Fun Facts about Roller-Skating
- It was a smash hit from the start. In 1760, John Joseph Merlin made waves at a fancy masquerade party when he debuted his new invention: wheeled shoes. Unfortunately for the inventor of roller-skates, he forgot to sign up for skating lessons first. Merlin promptly crashed, bruising his ego (but luckily not putting a dent into the popularity of roller-skating).
- It’s a pop culture staple. From Charlie Chaplin’s impressive skating moves in the silent film era to more modern music videos with Olivia Newton John, Mariah Carey, and Beyoncé, roller-skating isn’t going out of style anytime soon. The late great Prince was also an avid skater, bringing a unique style to the world of celebrity roller-skating.
- It’s a sport. Skating isn’t just a fun way for hockey players and Olympic speed skaters to practice during the summer. Roller-skating has a variety of its own sports, from trick skaters to jam skaters to roller-derby teams. Skatetown USA is home to two skating teams: the South Florida Blades competitive speed team and the South Florida Roller Girls derby team.
- It’s good for you. No, we’re not just talking “good for your soul” (although it totally is). We’re talking one of the best cardiovascular and aerobic exercises out there. Skating is low impact and highly effective, burning 300-600 calories per hour (and that’s if you’re barely trying). Skating is a great way to keep families active and healthy while they’re having fun.
